Ok so i got the cory food and thought that they were all settled in alright until yesterday when i turned on the lights one of them was floating belly up at the top of the tank! I thought he was dead and was about to net him when he wiggle away. The other one seems fine.

He seems to be doing weird stuff a lot lately like, stopping swimming and letting himself float up to the top and then get carried around in the filter stream. He lies totally still and looks lifeless but then moves when you touch him.

So in a panic i went to the store and bought some swim bladder medicine that i am currently trying him on. Does anyone have any other ideas? I dont know what to do!

Just some advice--don't medicate until you know what you are treating. Often, treatments that are not needed can cause more problems than they resolve.

Cories can do some odd things--but this sounds more like an intestinal response to unsoaked foods than anything else. With swim bladder, the fish MUST exert itself constantly to avoid floating. If a fish eats lots of dry foods quickly, it can result in internal bubbles. It's commonly seen in goldfish, but can occur in other fish. It should resolve itself shortly, and I would start soaking the food in a cup of water before feeding.

I agree that cories tend to do wierd things. One of my cories likes to swim upside down at the top of the tank and eat food off of the surface with the minnows. Another one likes to sleep upside down in the water sprite. Odd but funny little creatures.

Hey thanks for the advice guys but unfortunately he died this morning. The other cory looks ok but seems to be keeping himself to himself. I will get some others so he isnt lonely. They dont all have to be the same kind of cory though do they?

it is better that the cories are of the same species as they school with their own type and prefer to be in groups of at least 3, pref 5 or more.

I have 1 albino, 1 bronze and 1 peppered and they seem to get along great and hang out together all the time. Albinos are bronzes anyway so it is easy to mix and match those guys. But the different species will get along fine if you can't find more of the same.

Just make sure to stay away from the new cories that have dye injected into them. Horrible thing. If it looks like an unnatural colour it probably is.

i agree that there is no harm in mixing cories, but they behave differently when they can school with their own.

i started off with one albino (aeneus), one bronze (aeneus) and one pepperred (paleatus). i had to get rid of the aeneus as they were getting nipped at by my puffers. Now I have 4 paleatus and 4 trilineatus and they stay in their own groups pretty much (except at feeding time!).

either way they are great fish and you can't go far wrong with them.
