ran across this on ebay and from the pic's it looks like a easy DIY project that could be done for alot less than the 115.00 starting bid price or am I wrong? I was thinking about making a few of these has anyone else made any like this?

that auction looks like it is a DIY and I agree that these are good candidates at least as far as construction is concerned.

I think proper operation and implementation will be harder than making the thing from what i have read about denitrators. I'd love to see a thread and some results if you decide to make one of these.

I see little use for it a FW tank, where plants will eat nitrates.

it just looks like a fancy overpriced biofilter to me. there are a lot of DIY methods to accomplish the same thing.

A regular biofilter contains aerobic nitrifying bacteria. The purpose of a denitrator is to provide an anaerobic area for denitrifying bacteria to convert nitrate to N2 gas.

I'd say unless your nitrate level is exceeding 25ppm in a fresh water tank despite regular water changes, it isn't worth the bother. And if it IS exceeding those levels, I'd be looking for the cause and fixing that, rather than going this route to circumvent the real problem. Water changes are still needed to control concentration of trace elements and such, so in the long run it doesn't save you any work, it just creates more.
