The mostly sunny weather in today's forecast will mark the start of several dry days for San Diego County.

James Oh, an NWS meteorologist, said rain and snow would likely return on Monday, the first day of winter.

There was a 20 percent chance of showers this morning in valley and desert areas, and a 30 percent chance in the mountains. By tonight, residents throughout the county can expect mostly clear skies with light winds, according to the Weather Service.

Though drier, parts of the county may still be cold enough to cause frost in wind-sheltered areas. The NWS issued a frost advisory for the valleys and deserts from 10 p.m. today to 10 a.m. Friday.

Highs today were forecast to be from the high 50s in the deserts and along the coast to the high 30s to mid-40s in the mountains and near the foothills.

On Wednesday, the second storm to hit Southern California this week dropped more than two inches of rain in some areas, according to the Weather Service.

In the region's higher elevations, Wednesday's storm produced steadysnowfall, deepening the drifts that accumulated Monday, the Weather Service reported.

The heavy precipitation resulted in road closures and auto wrecks throughout the region.

Between midnight and 11 p.m. Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol tallied 287 accidents on San Diego County freeways and back-country roads. During dry conditions, by comparison, the agency typically responds to 50-75 crashes over a 24-hour span.

By midday Wednesday, the swollen Tijuana River overflowed its banks just north of the U.S.-Mexico border, leaving dozens of people and horses trapped.

On Monday, a similar blustery late-autumn weather system dumped several inches of rain and snow in the San Diego area.

Well at least you won't get as much snow Jon. It looks like we are going to get the 6-12 inches. This past storm we had 4.5". They are already talking about a snow day for the schools out here. Good that way teenage son can get his butt in gear to do some shoveling. I have to be at work at 7am. That means I better leave at 6:45 am instead of my normal 6:55am.

Latest installment..

A WIND CHILL WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 12 PM CST /1 PM EST/ FRIDAY.
BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES COMBINED WITH WESTERLY WINDS OF 10 MPH WILL PRODUCE WIND CHILLS OF AROUND 30 BELOW ZERO... WITH SOME LOCATIONS OCCASIONALLY LOWERING TO NEAR 40 BELOW TONIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING. WIND CHILLS WILL RISE TO 20 TO 25 BELOW ZERO BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
THESE LOW WIND CHILLS ARE VERY DANGEROUS. IF YOU MUST GO OUTSIDE... MAKE SURE TO COVER ALL EXPOSED SKIN.
A WIND CHILL WARNING MEANS THE COMBINATION OF WIND AND VERY COLD AIR WILL CREATE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA OR DEATH IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.

OTHER HAZARDOUS WEATHER...
VERY COLD AIR HAS SPREAD INTO OKLAHOMA AND WESTERN NORTH TEXAS IN
THE WAKE OF AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT. WIND CHILL VALUES WILL REMAIN IN
THE TEENS AND 20S THIS AFTERNOON AND THEN DROP BACK INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS OVERNIGHT TONIGHT.

here's our wussy outlook.

i miss the snow. :( you all think you have it bad... try having nothing. heh.

... Wind chill warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Friday...

A wind chill warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Friday.

Bitterly cold Arctic air coupled with west winds of 5 to 15 mph
will continue wind chill readings from 25 to 35 below zero across
east central and southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin through
the afternoon. However... a persistent west wind will continue
overnight. The wind combined with lows near 20 below zero will
allow wind chill readings to drop back down to 30 below to 40
below zero into Friday morning.

A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and
winds will create dangerously cold wind chill values. This will
result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia or death if
precautions are not taken. When venturing outdoors... make sure
that you dress in layers... and wear a hat and gloves.

Yep, and school was still on for my district...idiots...

You guys all have my max respect. Best of luck to everyone throughout the country riding this cold stuff out; I honestly don't know how you do it. Meanwhile, we're all weak, spoiled and thin-blooded out here in Southern AZ. Not to gloat, but we are sharing forecasts:

Friday
Sunny. Highs 71 to 76. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph becoming north 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.

Friday Night
Mostly clear. Lows 39 to 44. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

This is why I live where I do.

Do you guys even have a weather man on the news? I just don't see the point down there. Or Does he come on just once a week? "Mon Sunny, tue sunny, wed sunny, thur sunny, fri partly sunny, sat sunny, Sunday .001% chance of rain."

If i lived there i would have nothing to complain about. I could say it's hot but "it's a dry heat."

Work and -19 seems like a bad combo...

Bellum. We do indeed have "weather persons" and they really have three things to report on:

1) Summer: How many consecutive days of 100+ without rain it has been (but its dry heat). We're all AC'ed here regardless, so the heat is less of an issue as some would like to make it.

2) Summer monsoon season: When it starts, how much rainfall, and how stupid people are for freaking out when the road is merely wet and/or trying to drive through flooded washes leading to their rescue.

3) The rare occasional storm that actually brings us snow down to the ~3000 ft. level (yes, we actually can get a dusting here).

On the whole its exciting weather but very predictable and rarely anything other than a delight to deal with.
