When using a foam filter that connects to an air pump, can the foam be covered with gravel? I have used this type of filter in a bare bottom tank, but would like to use 2 of them in a future 10 gallon Invert only tank, which will be planted and contain gravel.

If you want an air powered filter under the gravel, use an undergravel filter. Not really recommended for palnted tanks or any aquarium for that matter since you can't clean it. After awhile you have to completely strip your tank and clean it, only to disturb your biological filter bed and then you are starting from scratch with a cycle. If you want to stick to sponges, just put them on top of the gravel. Best wishes!

I have a sponge filter in my 10 gallon tank, gravel on the bottom of the tank. the inverts loved the sponge they ate on it so I fed them on it. ( pelleted food and brine shrimp. )

If you bury the sponge it's effectiveness will be reduced as the gravel will impede the water flow into the pores of the sponge. You could loosely stack some rocks on it to disguise it somewhat.

No, set the sponge filter on top of the gravel. Or dig out a little spot and scoot gravel up against it.

The sponge is the filter and can get dirty.I squeeze -clean it in tank water taken out of the tank in a bucket every 2 weeks.
