committed suicide. She was fine this morning. She crawled up the side of the tank then let go, gently fell to the bottom and remained there the rest of the day. She was closed up pretty tight, so I figured she was just "resting". I was concerned so I just checked on her and she doesn't react to any touch. She doesn't stink at least not yet. I'm pretty sure she is dead, but not 100%. What do I do?

Take it out of the water and smell it. You will definitely smell a foul smell, even if you never smelled a dead snail before. And if it does not smell, pop it back into the water and observe for a few days.

She doesn't smell. Do they stink as soon as they die, or does it take a little while.

Floating is part of their behavior. But if they are floating and their trapdoor is not tight and secure, there is a problem.

I say go to bed and smell her in the morning. Sometimes they just take extended naps:)

That sounded hilarious:lol:
I have been worried about mine a time or two. There was one time when one of them burrowed half into the sand and didn't move for two days! BUT, from what I have read... if they are closed up tight in their shell, they are still alive. When they die, that muscle relaxes.
So if she is closed up pretty tight, I think she's alright!
unless, of course, she smells....

Here is a great link that will set your mind to rest. And there are also videos of snails doing the leaping thing on youtube that are pretty funny. I am sure your snail is fine. Just be patient. :)

Them going to the top and letting go and floating to the bottom is what some of us like to call parasnailing. I have bred and raised purple and jade mysterysnails and tehy do it all the time. Give it a few days and see if she smells, mine have sat on the bottom for days. It could be a water issue too, when was the last time the tank had a water change?

That person sounds just like me, it's scary lol.
And I really, really wish my snails would do something like that!

My white made a jump fom my tank and was out of the water for quite some time, I put it back in the water and he opened back up after a couple of hours. I moved him over to my 5g hex and he has been enjoying himself quite a bit in the tank.

Tank gets change pretty much daily 25%-50% , it's almost completely cycled. ammonia is at 0 ,nitrite is >.5 ppm.
My other snails and fish are fine. Water temp steady at 79.

I've had her about a month, but I really have no clue how old. She wasn't very big, but was growing very quickly. If I had to estimate I'd say 6 months tops.

I have recently been having a die off of all my bigger brigs. Several in different tanks have died on me within the last month or so. Wonder if the time of year has something to do with it? JINKZY!!!! WHERE ARE YOU:)

They aren't dead until they are hanging out of their shells and do not retract in to its shell when you touch or handle them.... and yes, it will smell.

going dormant is not abnormal, especially for adult snails. I always leave them until I am COMPLETELY certain they are passed. I often will isolate in a breeder trap or qt tank until I am certain...it doesn't take long. I routinely have adult snails go inactive for days.

Yeah, I took her out of the water and she was limp and the smell made me wretch. RIP Snelly
