Here lately, I've found WalMat and PetSmart (our so called lfs) carrying some HUGE mystery snails. And when I say huge, I mean test for growth hormone huge.

How in the world do you keep them to get this big? I have such a hard time keeping them for any prolonged period of time.

They may be a larger growing species.

What are the problems you are having with your snails? How long have you kept them for? What happens to them?

I keep about six in a discus tank. The high protein food that I feed the discus makes them HUGE! I have one that is bigger than a golf ball.

Next time I'm there, I'll snap some pics. Definately golf ball size or bigger. I've never seem em that big that's for sure.

As for ... I can usually keep them for a couple of months at most then .... kaput!

If they are that big they are not mystery snails. They are probably Pomacea canaliculata not Pomacea Bridgesii. They are also plant eaters from what I have heard.

They're probably a different species then. The bridgesii only get so large. The baseball sized snails could be canas, or another of the larger species. Unfortunately (fortunately?) our Wal-mart doesn't carry ANY snails, let alone the larger species that I've been poking around for.

What color are their shells? Snap some pics. Anything larger than golfballs would be Pomacea canaliculata, Pomacea haustrum or Pomacea insularum. All three are banned for state by state shipping except if bought from your local stores or hobbyists within your state.

All three I mentioned are indeed voracious plant eaters. I have canas myself nearing baseball size. These lay pink eggs which are larger in comparison to the minute size pink eggs in large clutches by insularums. I haven't touched my canas' radula (rasping tongue) lately. They just bite and I did not like how I feel it.lol I wouldn't mix the canas with the diffusas. Problem is canas are too quick to consume anything.

We have normal sized ones, about the size of a quarter. But everynow and then we get in these Huge black Briggs, the size of a silver dollar. But now we are just getting in the smaller sized ones.
