I picked up a used setup recently and wonder about the Whisper 30 for the 29g tank? Is this filter good? Bad? decent?
is it enough?
Thanks

Depends on what you plan to stock. most here, as well as I, suggest getting a filter rated for twice the tank size. I would say add another filter and you will be good to go:)

I have several of them and I use them on 20 gallon tanks. They do the job on them. With a flow rate of 150GPH it gives you a 5X turnover. For a lightly stocked tank they are barely OK If you have messy fish or heavy stocking they won't do the job. I use the Whisper 30's and 40's on my 20's only. I won't use them on a larger tank.
My personal confidence level is a minimum of 6X an hour. When it comes to Whisper Filters I feel they are way over-rated and you should figure they are 60-75% capable of what they claim for largest application. This does NOT mean they are bad filters. I have some that are more than 10 years old and still work well. I just feel the rating is off kilter. The filter media used is the industry standard and works just fine. For quality they are acceptable as most parts are replaceable and easy to acquire should you need anything. I have not had to replace anything other than an impeller or two as expected of any filter.
