I bought a convict today and put it in the tank with my Oscar and Jack Demphsey. The Oscar and the Jack Demphsey get along just fine but right now they are both chasing the convict around. Are they doing it to establish their dominance over the new fish or could this become an ongoing problem?

ya they probably will go at the convict to some degree always...

you know that convicts are considered target fish for alot of larger cichlids?

if they have something like the convict to pick on they might not go at each other as bad

this will probably go on forever, it will be more frequent when you put him in eventually getting less and less, but i will always be there.

you will eventually find out the true nature of the convict, they are fairly small compared to most other american cichlids, like your JD and oscar, but he sure can dish out the pain if he feels like it.

I had an oscar and convict together once. The oscar was larger, but the convict held his own. Until one day the convict ate the oscars eyes, and killed it.

That sounds very unpleasant. The convict is in no way holding its own with the Oscar. It sort of is with the JD. Lots of high speed chases in my tank. I think my Oscar is getting dizzy with those two screaming around like they do:) He doesn't do much chasing anymore.
