i just bought some new fish online and i have a few questions.
the clam didn't make it. i did a very slow aclamation and placed it on a rock with medium water flow. the next mornning the hermit crabs were having a feast. what went wrong. it was my first clam.

the second thing is the sailfin has something on its tail. is this a parasite?

Quarantine...
Sorry to point out the obvious, but i would not of placed them directly in my display tank.
The clam seems to have been an exspensive meal for hermits, feel for you mate..
As for your Tang it could me a number of things from parasitic to fungal or viral, its a little hard to tell from the pictures.
Try looking up Gill flukes , Marine fungus ,(lchthyophonus) Cauliflower Disease (lymphocystis)
HTH wiz.

i thought clams were supposed to be placed in the sand up-right?????

If your clam died that quickly, it's likely that it didn't survive the shipping. You may have done nothing wrong. Our clam has never been bothered by the hermit crabs in our tank. If yours were eating it, they were probably only cleaning up the mess that was a dead or dieing clam. As for placement, I've always been told that clams need to be on a rock, not the sand. If they are kept low in the tank, as in on the sand bed, they should still be on a rock so they are not directly touching the sand. Our clam has been on a rock on top of the sand for around 8 months now with no problems.

kind of depends on which clam you have..on where to place it.. some bury themselves in the sand.

I ditto QT

I don't think you did anything to the clam, honestly. if it was getting eaten so soon i would say you possibly got a sick clam, considering how things happened and that the fish clearly has something on it, I wouldn't order from these people again. order from Dr. Foster and Smith their stuff is nice and healthy, plus you get 14 days guarantee.
