Yesterday I went and picked up two glass tops to go on top of my 55 gal with my DIY canopy and lights. The glass is about a 1/8th - 3/16th too long to fit down inside the trim like the old plastic top did. Now it rest cockeyed. With half resting on the plastic trim lip piece and the other sitting on top of the other side. when I go to open the top I have to really hold on or it falls in the tank. Can a quarter inch or so be trimed off the glass?? if so how??? or should I try to shave off some of the plastic trim??

if you wanna cut the glass theres this cutting wheel thing they have at homedpot in the tile section, you just score the glass in a line then get some pliers to snap it off then get something to sand down the edges a little.

...which works if you are good, and careful. I have done a bit of glass cutting with moderate success. I have found it difficult to take off very thin strips... 1/8 of an inch is very thin! The risk is that the break won't always follow your scored line, IME. It would be good to practice on a peice of scrap somewhere if you were able to.
Alternately, a glass shop might grind down the edge for you. I have ground down glass edges with my grinder, it worked but wasn't particularily pretty.

Far simpler would be to return the incorrect covers and get ones of the same brand as the tank.
