Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum, so I will give a little background information. I have kept freshwater tanks for several years and have had a small (20 gallon) salt water tank for about one year. I recently obtained an all glass 55 gallon tank that I want to make into a reef tank, complete with invertabres and fish. I am looking into building a sump for the tank. I figured that I could buy the overflow container premade and build the rest using a 20 gallon long tank. I would use acrlic o seperate the tank into three sections, placing bio balls in one section, a protien skimmer and heater in the second and the third would be used for the return pump. If anyone can help with a list of items that will be needed, tips that you may have, or problems you have faced when building a sump PLEASE let me know I need all the help I can get. I want to take my time and make this tank a center piece for my dining room.

thanks in advance for the help b33

For starters forget the bio balls because they will cause a nitrate problem if they not rinsed out with tank water reguly . First section filter pads ect seceond section skimmer and third return pump, heater can go in any section where it will fit.Make sure your return pump can return more then overflow puts into the sump then use a t-pice in the return pipe and a tap on the horizontal part of the t-pice which feeds back into the sump next to the return pump, this will let you match the flow too and from the tank.My return pump is powerfull enough to run the chiller as well. this is as simple as it gets. Hope this helps.
