is there a smaller topwater type fish (like normans lamp eye, for example) that can be kept with ~7 n. brichardi, or will they just tear them up? the tank is a 75 gallon and will be fully furnished with driftwood, rocks, and maybe some plants. and are they safe with oto's for algae control? or do i have to get some plecos

thanks :werd:

Otos, no. Giant danios, yes. Nerite snails, probably. I'd get the Clithon corona.

Once breeding occurs that 75 gallon tank will become much smaller...I prefer housing them in species only tanks.

Yep. Anubias, java fern, and vallisneria would be good to try out. They also do not require any special care.

Anubias are fine. Make sure to provide algae for the nerites once they run out. I culture mine so they don't run out.

Cyprichromis leptosoma and Paracyprichromis nigripinnis are both topwater sardine-like cichlids. They are native to Tanganyika and are schooling fish. They would look spectacular in a setup with N. Pulcher ( brichardi ).

One problem is that paracyps really like the rocky out croppings, which is where the brichardi will gaurd their territory like crazy.

Cyp leptosoma bulu points would be a top water action fin or you could go neon rainbows or preacox a cheaper version, i had a colony of brichardi in a 120gal with frontosa at one point and they really had the tanks middle occupied and were pretty aggressive, anubias is awesome and is what i have, here is a photo..

If you do go with Cyps or Paracyps and or rainbows make sure your top to your aquarium is completely closed off these species will take the leap of faith..

One thing to keep in mind is that you'll most likely never see either species in LFSs unless you have a breeder in the area. They don't transport well either so shipping is risky, not to mention expensive.

Thanks pappy i forgot to mention the shipping issues of cyp's and you are rightfully true they are very timid by nature something about fish eating them as a staple does something to you, hehehe..

thought he said he had n. brichardi.... n. pulcher is the daffodil. n. brichardi is the "standard" brichardi.

" Scientists have found evidence that the Lake Tanganyikan cichlids Neolamprologus brichardi and N. pulcher are actually one and the same species. "
