Canister return above or below the surface ?

Right now I have the filter return above the surface of the water which I believe is injecting a large amount of air into the water. Problem is that all of my flake food floats in that direction and then gets forced down to the bottom of the tank.

Should the canister filter return be above or below the surface. ? Pros / Cons to either ?

below...its precisely the reason that canisters are favored over HOB filters for planted tanks. with the intake below, there is much less gas exchange and therefore more CO2 for the plants to use

But since I have no live plants wouldn't that create high CO2 levels for the fish ?.
 
Are you injecting CO2? If not, dn't worry about it. I keep mine below and pointed up to ripple the surface.
