I've been very generous with my wife this Christmas. I bought her a new car and put an offer down on a new house (I'll be paying for this Christmas for 30 years if it all goes through).

If the deal with the new house goes down my wife told me she would like have a corner hex tank in the formal living room. I instantly thought 60-70 gallon, planted, CO2, custom built stand (I'll get a nice big garage), with LED lighting.

Now as to the stocking and planting list. I have a few ideas but I'm not sure. I want to do a tank full of fish less than 3". Now as to planting. I don't got a clue as to what I want. I've been tinkering around with growing some amazon swords, java moss and java ferns in my 15 gallon tank in the garage. I'm not the biggest fan of how any of them look but I am getting them all to grow well.

I of course have to figure out the filtration, substrate, and such.

As this will be about #5 on the list of things that I have to build it will probably take me a year or so to get around to it. I like to take my time and plan things out.

If you could toss up species of fish and plants that you guys know will go well together so I can try to develop my stocking/planting list.

Come back to this post in 2 years when you are ready to buy your tank ;)

cories. rummynose. otos.

Come back to this post in 2 years when you are ready to buy your tank ;)

I'm a plant breeder. 2 years is a blink of an eye. That's only 5 generations at maximum speed. Takes me 2.5 years to test cross the first hybrids. Then it takes 3-5 years to see if the hybrid makes it in the market. I'm a patient sort of guy.

Collecting the right plants and fish can take several years. I can set up 4-5 10-15 gallon tanks in the garage for next to nothing and prepare for the show tank. It will also give me a chance to learn the idiosyncrasies of each species. (pretty good argument, I'll need to remember that one to use against my wife).

lol

cories, platys, endlers/guppies, neons???

i think you should get a bichir (like delhezi) :D any clue what the footprint of the tank would be? Maybe a nice little african biotope

^somebody missed the 3" maximum fish size. LOL and a voracious carnivore to boot ;)

The wife likes guppies, rummy nose and bleeding hearts have possibilities. German ram's and rainbows (smaller species) are both an option. Oto's are pretty much a requirement as I don't want snails if I can avoid them. I kind of like the the idea of a large school of small minnow speices with a couple larger showy fish.

wait wait wait...... a new car and a new house and all you get is one tank? your getting screwed out of this deal.

ok what i would do is look for schizotypalvamp thread on small fish. my 120 i am doing fish max 2 inch. most are 1 inch - 1.5 inch.

really there are so many different small fish i am finding it hard to limit my self in my 120 stocking.

If your aim on lighting is LEDs, ohh boy are hex tanks wonderful, assuming they arn't too tall of course. Anywhere past 24" and you've got issues. Optics will probably be required, anything past 16" depth needs optics IMO.

a good start though on lighting is 1 LED for every 24 square inches surface area, should be more than enough for what you want to grow. To calculate area on a hex, just use this formula: [(3√3)/2]s2 (s2=side in inches, squared).

Good LEDs of choice would be Luxeon Rebels or Cree XR-E Q5's,
