Hey Now,

I am putting together a 10 gallon tank and I am thinking about purchasing the Tronic 7'' 50 watt by hagen. Now the heater at big al's online is 15.99

Is this way too much to pay for a heater? I will be putting in a school of cardinal tetras (12) and 2 corys. The cardinals like nice warm water 82-85 constant i am told.

Is it worth paying this much for a really nice heater?

Are there any great heaters for cheaper that ar eknown to work really well?

thanks!

take care,
jared

I personally wouldn't skimp on a heater. It's a very important component of your aquarium. Get a good themometer also.

Definitely. Most of my heaters are Ebo Jagers, but I have a Tronics as well, and they seem well built as well. I believe Big Al's sell both Ebo Jager's and Tronics.

The difference between the best heaters and the cheapest is so minimal that it really doesn't make sense to scrimp here. The potential for damage caused by a cheapo heater is substantial; buy the best (e.g., Tronic, Ebo Jager) and consider the extra buck or two 'piece of mind insurance.'

I'd stick with the Ebo's, best piece of aquarium equipment there is...

I agree with everytone else that a name band heater, such as a Tronic or Ebo Jaber, are the way to go. I used to by the cheapest glass heaters that I could find and this was a huge mistake. More that once, I almost lost my fish because the heater stuck on.
