Hi All,

I have a question. Can anyone explain to me what 34 ppt translates to in gravity for salt water?

This was translated from a French website regarding breeding Amano Shrimp. I understand most salt water is at 1.023 specific gravity. But I am not familiar with the 34 ppt. Any information you could provide would be appreciated.

P.S. I would post a link to the website, however it seems to be down at the time. Thanks.

I'm guessing it's parts per trillion.

One part per trillion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orders_of_magnitude_(numbers)#1012) (ppt): Denotes one part per 1,000,000,000,000 parts, one part in 1012, and a value of 1 × 10–12. This is equivalent to 1 drop of water diluted into 20, two-meter-deep Olympic-size swimming pools (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic-size_swimming_pool) (50,000 m³), or one second of time in approximately 31,700 years.

It means parts per thousand!

Here’s a link to do the conversion:

You also need the temperature at a given salinity to get the correct specific gravity, since it greatly affects the reading.
