Are there any cichlids that can live in a 10 gallon planted tank? I've been thinking I wanted to do a community tank, but I also think it would be cool to get a cichlid (just one) instead. They have so much personality and are very fun to watch.

Can they live alone? I though that they needed to live in pairs to be happy.

Try Apistogramma nijsseni. Common names: panda dwarf cichlid, Nijssen's dwarf cichlid. Gets to 2". You could do 1 and mabye some cardinal/neon tetras for a beautiful display.

or tanganyika shell dwellers but i dont what kind, wat kind is yours lex? and blue rams can happily live on their own without a mate! many do as the males are very pushy with the females and can often stress them to death which nearly happened to mine......

Mine is a brevis, you could also do multies or occe's. I was told this for stocking:
Brevis- 5 at the most- 1:3-4 male:female ratio
Occelatus- 5 at the most- 1:3-4 male-female ratio
Multifasciatus- 8 at the most- 1:3-4 male-female ratio

Shellies will ruin plants with their constant digging and rearranging.

Rams do just fine on their own. I've kept plenty of them, and gotten them to beautiful colors. Their big deal is soft, consistent water. Most other apistos I know of would work, too. A pair might be doable, but pairs break and I couldn't see territory disputes being pretty in a tank that size.
Shell dwellers are a good bet when they don't tear at plants, but you'll have to check out water param compatibility between your tap, plants and them. J. transcriptus pairs have been kept and bred in 10g's as well.
