I have a few questions. I have been keeping cichlids for a few years, but have had zero success with planted tanks. I am planning on creating a planted tank with a 60 gallon tank I am recieving from a friend. I have already ordered a 216 watt T5HO unit. I am planning on starting with low light plants. Maybe a few swords. Is this too much light for them? Should I invest in a pressurized co2 system? If so, what would be a good system for this tank? The tank comes with sand. Should I use the sand, or should I invest in a sustrate. Please bless me with your guidance.

You can "never" have "too much" light in a planted tank--to a point. To avoid future alage problems I would add CO2, and using sand is OK.

With that much light, you'll definitely want CO2, ferts, and not need to worry about low "light plants" IMO.
Oh... and keep the trimmers very handy! ;)

Oh yeah, CO2 will be needed. That light you're getting will be a beast!!!
As far as the CO2 system, Milwaukee makes a good set up with a regulator, bubble counter, needle valve, etc.

Or you can DIY it and just get parts here and there ( That's what I did.)
Get your 5 or 10 lb CO2 cylinder from a welding shop or fire extinguisher place.

I'd say it's definitely over the top for the OP's plans.
Even with Co2 and ferts you'll want fast growing stem plants (rotala, ludwiga, hygrophila species) to outcompete algae.

IMO u better start with low light tank than low light plants if u are beginner in plants. If u want to start high light tank u will defintely need c02 and ferts and as jappy suggest fast growing plants cause u will have to combat algae. Algae are major problem in planted tank.
