ok..i connected a large piece of driftwood to a large piece of slate with some sort of screw i had in the basement..It snapped right in two after being in the aquarium for a couple of days.. any suggestions on attaching driftwood to slate ?

Stainless steel screws only..pre-drill a pilot hole...

also try using silicone to attach the wood to the slate

Or drill clearance for the small end of a long zip tie in slate, run tie through or around wood, back through slate, zip closed.

fishing line?????
I have also read where some people have used superglue they say it is non toxic when dry,have not tryed it myself.

I drilled a hole in my driftwood and then used fishing line to tie it to the slate. The hole worked well for the 3 months it took until it was waterlogged enough to sink on it's own.

I would just put in a stainless steel bolt through the slate and into the wood. But be sure to drill the hole in the wood one size smaller so it fits nice and tight.
I only use stainless screws on big pieces. For smaller pieces I use fishing line.

DONT TRY SUPER GLUE!!! it wears off and that is what i used and it shot up so fast that it cracked my glass top :(
