Stainless steel screws only..pre-drill a pilot hole...

also try using silicone to attach the wood to the slate

Or drill clearance for the small end of a long zip tie in slate, run tie through or around wood, back through slate, zip closed.

I drilled a hole in my driftwood and then used fishing line to tie it to the slate. The hole worked well for the 3 months it took until it was waterlogged enough to sink on it's own.

I would just put in a stainless steel bolt through the slate and into the wood. But be sure to drill the hole in the wood one size smaller so it fits nice and tight.

I only use stainless screws on big pieces. For smaller pieces I use fishing line.
