One of the bulbs on my Eclipse hood is on its way out, and the filter is pretty poor. I am considering replacing the whole thing, but having a hard time finding anywhere that sells aquarium tops. The only thing I can find so far is Versa tops, which is fine, but I am not sure what other options there are.

Can the Coralife F/W Aqualight T-5 be used over open water? I think I would prefer to have a lid of some kind, but just wondering if I can replace the filter/light for now and then add a lid at a later date (even though the lid is the cheapest part, its also not the most essential part).

I don't think (although its always possible) that any of my fish are jumpers, the tank it would be going on has 2 angels and 5 otos.

I am looking at possibly getting the Coralife Aqualight and a Cascade 1200 filter (the filter will go on my 55G, the Cascade 700 I have will go on the 29G). I can get both the light and filter for $106 at the moment from Big Als. I know that the Cascade is not the best filter around, but it fits my budget, and the 700 model I have has my 55G looking very clean.

At the moment just getting a shopping list together, I have spare bulbs for the Eclipse hood, just really debating ditching it and upgrading at the same time :)

All fish can be considered jumpers, just some have a tendency to do it more than others.

You should be able to get away with using the fixture over open water short-term.

Eh, I think instead of risking either light or fish I should just wait until I get the top as well, especially since for a 29G it looks like the top should only cost around $30.

Do Big Als sell tops? I can't seem to find any on there? kind of annoying since they have cheap prices on the other things I want, just can't find any tops, but I could be using the wrong search terms (although not sure how else I can work Aquarium Top)!!

Those Coralife fixtures and most others, have an acrylic splash guard and are fine over open water. Half my tanks are open, since I have T5 or PC lights over them, and I love being able to reach in them easy, but I have a lost a few tetra and a SAE to jumping, but its been like 2-3 outta a couple hundred fish.
