are you sure that is a 29 gallon tank? it looks to me like a 15 high maybe 20 High at the most. Those fish need to be in at least a 55 gallon tank. Definately larger for the oscar. I would plan to upgrade asap

We've been hearing that forever dude. Let the nice people of AC guide you into keeping some smaller fish suitable for the tank you have, not the imaginary one.
Think of it as not having a chance to upgrade. Buy the fish for the size tank you have now...............

I will not rag you, Im glad you are here :) but......
1. you need to clean the glass and such as the tank looks dirty.
2. I do hope with those fish you are doing at least a 50% water change 2 to 3 days a week as there big for that tank and put a lot of waste out.
I know you love your babies, so make it a prettier home hon, its not that nice and well it could look much better. cleaning it will improve the look right away :)
Really there pretty fish, looks healthy and thats important.
They just need to have a cleaner tank to look out of
Have a wonderful New Years !!

Beautiful fish. Thinking about their terrible conditions and imminent deformities/deaths makes me kinda sad.

I understand that you have planned a larger tank for your fish, and I commend that. However, its not a matter of "if", its a matter of "when". The sooner they get a larger home the better. Waiting until your fish completely grow out may be a little late. I'm sure the people here just mean to be helpful, not critical or negative. We truly care about fish and wish for them to have a good life, which isn't always available to them (remember those kids and their betta bowls?).
Also, a larger tank will make your job easier as you won't have to do as many water changes as you would in a smaller tank. Your fish seem to be perfectly fine now, but as they grow they will need the room to prevent any stunting. The fish themselves will also enjoy the room of a larger tank. Best of luck to you :).

Nice fish!! Upgrade soon as health problems are imenent with that small of a tank. That Oscar will grow 1-3 inches a month if not stunted.

That tank is in terrible condition. How about you not spend money on buying fish and spend it on more powerful filters and a WAY bigger tank? I hope you do 75% water changes every day, that water looks like you pumped it from a septic tank, I sure wouldn't want to live in that water. Why don't you trade the fish in to the LFS and use the store credit to buy a bigger tank, or in this case an indoor pond. I find that hard to beleive, how will you filter it and heat it? It's gonna take a lot of moeny to buy filters large enough for a small pond. A Fluval FX5 costs about $230.

Honey, please believe me when I say, no one is trying to be mean, or rude to you... It's just that these guys have more years of fishkeeping than you've been alive, many times over....
and those fish will suffer terribly, even if you can't see it in their faces, they are not going to be happy, and in fact, they will be miserable very very soon.
Please, big fish are cool, but if you still live at home, you don't have all the options, yet. Unless your parents get you a 150 gallon tank, like right now, you are going to have dying fish.
But before they die, they will suffer hellishly. The fish store will take them back. For that tank, start out smaller... there are threads on this forum that offer great choices for tanks that size.
I'm still learning and want to move more slowly so I can keep fish in a safe and happy enviornment for them.
Please, for their good, take them back. You'll get lots of help here... these folks can really help... and we'll all enjoy seeing your 29 gallon with healthy happy fish.

wow, just wow... Is pre or post tank cleaning?
Start up a thread seeking stock options for a 29G tank, indicating what your preferences are and you will get a ton of suggestions.
You can have cichlids - just a question of the right kind. Put your thread in the cichlid forum and we will give you all the help you need.
Generally this forum is not where people post views on your stocking etc. etc. but in this instance the situation is so bad that it warrants comment.
If you keep those fish in that size tank your fish will die and you will be sad.
A wise man once said :
the 125 should only allowed 2 oscars and a jd.
I don't think you'd enjoy these fish in an indoor pond as much as you would in a suitable much much much much larger tank but a heated 150+ gallon indoor pond would be an option to get them in something much more appropriate before they.....

well for the oscar con and jds a 100 gallon stock pond.
So how long before you have this pond set up and running?

Let me put this into perspective, I got my Oscars about 4 months ago, at about the same size as your little guy's. I will post a pic of them now in a 110 that they are QUICKLY outgrowing. For larger cichlids like O's you need at least twice the recommended filtration for their tank as they produce lots of waste and produce massive amounts of ammonia. If you intend to upgrade you should have done so yesterday...
It will take at least a month to cycle your "stock pond" and 100 gallons just isn't going to do it. So if you go the 100 gallon route you'll be sinking more money within the next few months (which judging from your current set up the budget seems limited). Hopefully the reality will come to light, and you can purchase fish that your 29 is suitable for.
First pic is when I brought them home about 4 months ago in a 55 and the second is from today in a 110 and that tank is getting too small fast. just use the rock in both pics to judge growth...

ya why what does it look like to u?
Get some smaller fishy fishies that you can put in there and you can see way more activity! Give those pretty babies to the LFS & swap them out for some other kinds! I'm sure they would appreciate it and they would give you a kiss on the cheek if they could :) I'm sure someone out there with a nice BIG BIG tank would love to showcase those guys! That's a good size tank for some different fish and you have a lot of room for decoration and plants! :) Good luck! :)

In todays society you have to pay on average here in the north east of about $150.00 to get an animal from the pound. You need to go through a screening process and sign you life away. It's to bad we don't do something similar with fish, sell anyone a basic set up let them stock it with what they wish fresh salt Africans, but after 6 months you should be required to show your tank to the pet store and prove your capable of providing the basic home for your new pet. Not picking on you livebearer just seeing your tanks lack of cleaning which isn't terrible i have seen allot worse unfortunately and at pet stores no less. I'm on the flip side I'm on the extreme overkill i guess i believe in creating a slice of nature not just a fish bowl. I never need to add any chemicals for disease. I have seen parasites in the tank from time to time when a fish disappears. BUT it never affects any of the other fish. In the past i have bought fish that were sick with cotton mouth or parasite riddled gave um a quick dip then placed them in the planted tank and maybe i just got lucky but they healed and no one else got sick.
