View Full Version : Arowana Tank Question
Hi, I just registered for this forum, and I am not sure but I believe this is the right place to ask my question (I apologize if it is not). I have had about 6 years experience raising Arowana (Asian / Australian / Silver) , but I have never kept the fish in anything smaller than 350 g by the time they reach 18". I am moving to a new apartment, and I do not think I will be able to bring a tank of that size because of weight problems. I am wondering if any of you have had sucess with arowana in tanks of about 120 to 200 gallons. I am a bit hesitant to keep one in such a size, however I have known many people who claim to have raised them well in smaller tanks. Feedback would be greatly appreciated-

what kind are you trying to get their size are a lot differnt. a lot of the asians, austrailians can go in tanks that are 4x2 feet since in asia they have smaller houses etc. i have a silver in a 180 and i think hes fine people will object but hes a little over 2 feet and only uses about 1.25 feet to make a uturn so i will keep him there until i get something better of he dosent look happy.
Right, sorry I did not clarify that. I will be keeping only one RTG arowana, which is an Asian breed. I lived in Asia for over 8 years, during which time I saw a lot of the fish kept in 4 x 2 x 2, but from my personal experience this has not been sufficient for healthy growth, although in your case it is working out well. I also have had the least experience with the Silver breed, so perhaps that is a different case altogether.

is a 4x2 too small not sure i never had an asian. my neighbor had one in a 4x3 by 3 feet tall for a while. i was just going by what they have at arofanatics. they are all from malaysia, singapore etc. and thats what i see more often, if i had one though it would be in atleast a 6x2 so i can give him some tankmates.
Yeah the 4 x 2 definitely is the standard suggested by a lot of people for that type of fish, so I wonder myself exactly how good of a startegy that is. If many people are having success with it than maybe it isnt such a bad idea, but I think I would feel a bit guilty nonetheless just because I hate seeing such large fish restricted to smaller spaces. Personally I have never seen an Asian grow as large as a silver, but I have heard of it. Im sure that it really depends on the breed and the conditions it is raised in. Actually since you seem interested I can drop you a great link for the Asian arowanas. This is the URL for Dragon Fish Industry, a Singapore based fish farm that raises truly top-grade arowana. Check out the Metal Reds (pictures), they are my favorite.
