What is a good filter for a 10 gal. fry tank? My daughter had a top fin filter in her 10. gal tank, and doen't feel like it is doing the job. The water smells funny and looks dirty. The tank has been set up for a month with cycled water from the 55 gal. tank she has. She has done water changes, too; and they have tested the water and it comes back fine, but there is just something not right. She wants to buy a better filter. Any suggestions?

A sponge filter would be best for your situation. How often are you changing the water? How many fish are in it?

Right now, only a couple. It will basicly be used as a fry tank. My daughter has a mixed african tank, and she has already had a batch of peacock fry. I think they usually change the water every other week.

Sponge would be enough. Also an AC 20 would get my vote.

I would up the wc's, especially with fry. They're more sensitive to water quality and the heavier feeding can easily cause params to go out of whack. Another thing is that I found top fins to be garbage filters a while back...cheaply made IMHO.
