I want to get a cannister filter for my 120g oscar tank.Right now it has HOB filters on it that work fine, but I am think about getting a cannister to clean up the look of the back of the tank.I know there are a lot of people here who use cannisters and I am wondering what is the best one. Also,do they come with all the hoses needed to use,or does anything need to be bought sperately? Here are some I have been considering,

Eheim, for sure. Their quality of build is superb and they are super quiet. I bought a Rena Filstar XP3 and an Eheim 2026 and hands down the more superior filter has to be the Eheim.

I would go for the Eheim as well. I switched to them from Fluval canisters years ago and have been very happy. Unfortunately the quality of the proffesional series comes with a hefty price tag.
The price on that first one is very tempting. From personal experiance, not with that filter perse just in general, It just seems like the more features a company packs into something at a low cost = more things to break and low quality over all. JMHO.

I think any of the Marineland, Filstar, or Eheim choices will be good. They're all well-regarded filters.
If you are planing on only one filter (Really, two should be used on a 120 IMO) as much as I LOVE Eheim I think the FX5 would be best out of those choices.
Those marineland cans look nice but do they last for years and years? Nobody knows because they haven't been out that long.
If by chance you are going with two filters, 2x2217 would be fine.

also check www.kensfish.com (http://www.kensfish.com) for prices on canister filters, his have been the best prices that I have found. On my 120g oscar tank i have a c-360, an AC110, and an Emperor 400 (i think). I plan on ditchign the emperor and adding another c-360 when i save up the cash. 2 c-360's would be great on a 120g.

Pretty much all cannisters are workable (Marineland, RENA, Eheim, Fluval)...it really comes down to price and personal preferance.

I've had a Eheim 2215 for about a year. I used to have a HOB also.
Ran them both for a little while until I was sure the canister had cycled.
I love the quiet canister. :thm:

I was planning on running 2,but probably won't be purchasing them at the same time,so the HOB's will be running with 1 until I have the $$ for 2.Thanks for all the suggestions.

Id still go C-360 over the 2217, for one the flow is much higher on the C-360 but for about the same price. Not to mention, I love my 160
The C-360 boasts 360gph but that is WITHOUT the media, with media specs are a lot closer to the 2217.
The 360 looks like a nice filter but I would prefer a proven workhorse like the 2217 that has been around for over 30 years.

whereas the 2217 boasts a whopping 264 GPH, without the media as well.

I guess what i can do is say what I like about the canisters I have had.
The xp series: love the spray bar, canister is self priming and easy to set up. What i don't like is the plastic is kind of brittle and the intake is blue as opposed to black.
cseries: love the swivel head on the quick release, doesn't have a spray bar. The media baskets lock in tight and you have to be very careful about alignment. Really seems powerful though and I am super pleased with media space and performance.
Haven't used an eheim to comment, though they are "tried and true".

I am totally sold on the Marineland C-Series filters, they already come with the media, they have a quick prime feature, and they have a lot of room for media.

I'm new to this all, but am running a Fluval 305 and love it. It was easy to set up, and it's so quiet the only thing I hear at all is the air pump going to the air stones.

Eheim - German engineering at it's finest. Can't say enough good things about my 2217.

I just hooked up my first canister. A Penn-Plax 700. So far, it is working fine. Nice and quiet...love that aspect of it. Why did I choose this one....price. I woulda liked to get one of the more expensive ones by way of being recommended by alot of folks, but wallet says otherwise.
Maybe a good start when switching over to canisters. We'll see.
Update? Which one did ya get?

I switched from two HOBs(Wisper and an AquaTech, both rated for 60g) on my 55 to a Filstar XP3, which I think is great. Comes with everything needed, including media(last I knew, no bio media though, XP4 comes with all three types), ample media space, quiet, easy to maintain and alot of power---350gph w/o media and up to a 175g tank which in my opinion translates to up to a 75g tank(manufacturers always overrate their filters tank size ability, right?) plus the price of the XP series seems to be reasonably affordable.....alot less expensive than many others I saw while shopping for a canister.
