I just went to give my snails some carrot and my ivory snail was floating on the top with her door open slightly and pooching out. I picked her up and the water was hot! 85 degrees. I grabbed the heater, a stealth visitherm and pulled it out of the water. It was sizzling! Jeeze, now I am off to the LFS.
On the good side I got the blood test results on my 19 year old cat who is in renal failure, they were improved and his kidneys are working marginally better.:thm:

Glad to hear your cat's improvement.

I'm not impressed with the Stealth heaters either and have had trouble with them not heating at all. Fortunately, I haven't experienced your problem.

A friend a my fave LFS explained to me that the thermostat is controlled by a piece of metal tempered to react (expand/contract) to certain temps. The problem is that all heaters of this type no matter the brand use the same method. Sometimes the metal and setting knob stick either open or closed causing the heater to overheat or not heat at all.

He mentioned there are some very expensive heaters that have digital thermostats. I think Hydor is one. I can't remember the other he mentioned. The problem is that they are cost prohibitive on multiple tanks and even on one for most of us.

i had an issue recenty with my visitherm stealth, after talking ot a very wise man <wesleydnunder> i unplugged it for 15 minutes and it reset its calibration and is working great.

I went for stealth because I have a really large semi aquatic crab and he is famous for moving things around in his tank so I liked the fact that it was shatterproof with an automatic shut off. This was the first problem I had and I hope the last. Rachel, I will put the old heater in my Q tank and see if it resets. (no fish in it)Thanks for the advice. :)
