I have a betta in my tank currently, after I get some plants in there I was thinking about introducing some fish. Since my tank is only 6 gallons, I was thinking about 6 fish and 2 amano shrimp to accompany my betta. (hoping that isn't too much, please let me know if it is and what the max should be)
The fish I was thinking are Zebra Danios, Celestial Pearl Danios (know nothing about these), Neon Tetras, or Black Neon Tetras. I would prefer to have the best variety of fish possible. Would it work to have 3 neon tetras and 3 black neon tetras? or 3 zebra danios and 3 celestial pearl danios?
A great variety would be really cool if possible but I want to hear what everyone thinks. Thanks for the help

i think maybe the neon tetras and black neon tetras would be great in there!! The danios are fast and need a lot of space so. yeah, but maybe if there were only those, that would be okay too!

I've heard a lot of concern about Betta's eating shrimp and fish, should I test him by buying only 1 shrimp and 1 fish before I buy all of my fish and risk getting all of them eaten or should I put a few shrimp in at a time, and a few fish in at a time?

IME it depends on the betta. I would start out slowly and see how he does. In a tank that size, I would just stick with the betta and Amanos. If he doesn't harass them, they'll be great to watch.

I needed to move my betta out of his tank to plant it and I placed him in my 10 gallon shrimp tank for about a half hour. I finished re-doing his tank and wen to get him only to find him stalking the shrimp. I have no idea how many he ate while he was in there but I know he got a few of the juveniles. I have a ramshorn snail in his tank and I have seen him strike at the snail! Mine will not have any tankmates.
It just depends upon the individual fish. I'd suggest you leave well enough alone and stick with just the betta.

You want 6 or more in a school, tank is to pretty small.6 neons maybe ,not very hardy fish and the betta might eat them.

I keep a betta with neon tetras, and I've heard of/spoken to several others who do. No eating so far, although for the first couple of weeks the neons nibbled at him curiously and he flared at them irritably. I don't think an adult neon is small enough for a betta to eat, either, although neons which are young and fresh from the store might have more trouble.
Like other people have said, a lot of it depends on the individual betta. Mine also doesn't mind ramshorn snails, for instance, while PuppyFluffer's does.

6 gallons is pretty small for anything other than just the betta, though, so I agree - sticking to that for now would probably be best, and definately don't add danios. If your betta doesn't mind shrimp or snails, though, they would be nice additions.

Black neons are too big for a tank that small. They are bigger than the standard neons....JMO

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it. I'm thinking about buying a few ghost shrimp at first to test how my Betta does with them. If he does ok with them I might get the Amano's. I'm definitely going to wait on the fish and realized that I was trying to pack the thing too tight. If the shrimp don't work and I decide against the fish then I may go with some African Dwarf Frogs. Thanks for all the help
