actually, the pair are in a 265 that has to be moved soon. So in order to make as little work as possible, I placed only easily-removable objects in the tank as barriers: pots, grids, driftwood. (no gravel or substrate).....
if you had gravel they would show alot more color and will have a generaly better all over apperance i recommend you put some gravel it but if you cant for any reason thats ok but if you can i advise it.
thanks dragon. I already have another breeding pair of Nics with unbelievable color and 200 fry in another tank. I keep my 6 african tanks with a crushed coral substrate and 6 (New World) tanks with natural looking river rock.
I have 3 female Nics that I keep with my Africans. They have similar water requirements and look remarkly like African. Their head shape looks like Tropheus and Mbuna and the body color resembles many Haplochromine species. They are also extraordinarily hardy. A year ago I threw in a Nic to accompany a sick fish in a hospital tank for treatment. I know it was cruel but the Nic provided me a bio monitor on overdosing and to help consume food the sick fish wouldn't eat. I adminstered three differnt antibiotic over a 2 week period. The sick fish eventually died of horible bacterial infection that practically ate away the flesh, but the Nic was hardly affected. She continued to eat until the end of treatment when she started to develope a small lession on the body. I threw her back to the community tank and she recovered completely in a week and now turned into a beautiful fish.
