I've heard that if your fish stay at the top that it might mean there is low oxygen levels in the tank...but I have a pair of danios in my 12g and I know they like to stay towards the top so I'm not sure if it's just them being THEM or lack of oxygen??

I have a eclipse with a biofilter but I'm not sure that means anything in ways of good oxygen distribution? I get a lot of bubbles at the top of the tank so I figured that would be where the oxygen is coming from? I'm probably so totally wrong so correct me if I am PLZ!

If lack of oxygen is the problem will a small bubble stone be a good fix?

Thanks 4 listening!

Are the fish gasping? I believe danios will swim anywhere. If they are working their mouths and gills hard it is a sign of O2 depletion. A little surface turbulence is all you really need to keep the tank oxygenated. Ammonia poisoning will also lead to gasping and swimming at the top as the gills get burned and do not work as well as they should.

A small air pump and stone will help aerate the aquarium.

They dont seem to be going to the top and gasping and they spend a lot of time in other areas of the tank but maybe i'm just being paranoid. There is a lot of surface agitation in my tank because I see the bubbles being tossed all over the middle and upper regions of the tank. But tell me...are fish supposed to look like they are always chewing on something?? or is there something wrong with them

They breathe by forcing water over their gills. So the mouths are moving all the time, if the O2 was low you would know it as they would be working their mouths hard and rapidly.

Okay so I take it that as long as they are not at the top GASPING for air everything is fine...I hope. I've only had these fishes for 2 days but I love them haha

the filter should cause enough surface agitation to oxygenate the water just fine. :]

Are the fish just hanging there or swimming around at the top. Also if they are just hanging there how long? Danios are to be fairly active so if they don't start swimming around (even if just at the top) I may be a little concerned. Then again they might be lazy but I have never seen Danios that were lazy lol.

My danios run the full length of the tank playing chasing games. They are very active. I have a school of 8 in my 29 gallon. They are lots of fun to watch. I have never seen one stop.
