I just got this UV sterilizer from an AC member today:

I plan to run it with its own pump in my 125. I know that it's a hanger unit so that the longer rectangular part hangs over the tank edge. And I assume the the barbed piece sticking out of the back is where I attach the pump.

Now to actually set this up, do I have to have an intake that sucks the water up from the tank, and brings it to the pump which in turn sends it through the sterilizer? If that's not the way that it's suppoed to go, then I have no clue how else to set this up and need some serious help from you guys :)

Also, what type of pump should I get? There's a pump recommended on the page of the link but I have no clue if that's the best one for this unit or not.

Ws just looking on Drsfostersmith.com and found that for a 15W sterilizer you need 230gph to control bacteria and algae and 75 gph to control parasites. So I guess that I need a pump that will give me at least 230gph?

Would a submersible pump work?

You don't want the water moving quickly through the sterilizer. The longer the parasites and other nasties are exposed to the UV bulb the more effective it is at killing them.

Based on these directions on that site, you could use a powerhead as the pump:

Unit should be mounted or placed above ground.
Any port can be used as an inlet or outlet.
Connect a 0.75" hose (not included) to power head or pump (not included), the other 0.75" hose back into tank or pond, for best operation UV should be connected after a filter.
One end of the hose should be at the opposite end of tank or pond.
Add extra hose if needed.
After all connections have been made, turn pump on.
Run for 3 minutes to check for leaks.
Turn off pump and disconnect the power supply.
Connect the lamp to ballast, make sure that lamp is plugged in all the way.
Slide lamp into quartz slowly and straight making sure that you do not lift up on lamp. This will cause quartz sleeve to break, which is not covered under warranty.
Screw ballast onto unit. Not too tight just snug.
Turn the water on before plugging transformer into GFCI.
If unit is dry and you have no leaks it is safe to plug in the transformer.
The clear trans cap will glow, indicating the lamp is on.
This is a water cooled unit, do not operate this unit without water flow or damage will occur.

Any pump up to the max flow rate will work.

no, you will need a pump 230 or less

A submersible pump will work but you would have a pump sitting in your display tank. A smaller pump or powerhead would probably work alright since it is a closed loop, and would be easy enough to hide in one of the upper corners. the other option is to use an external pump, but that would get slightly more complex.
