Hi

I'm lookin for some expert advice. I have a pair of Bristlenose Plec's who have been produceing babies now for ages. I grow them on in a nursery tank and then supply the local fish shop with them.

The only thing is all the babies appear to be female. I know that they don't get any bristles until they reach about an inch long, but I keep mine untill they reach about 2.5 inches and they never get any bristles. Any ideas why this is?

what temp do you keep the eggs incubated at?

I don't touch the eggs. Dad looks after them untill they hatch and no fish would dare go in there. I catch teh new babies as soon as I can find them in the tank.

The tank temp is 80 though

How big are dads bristles - I've bred a bunch of these, and have never sold one with bristles - most Ancistrus I see aren't of the superbristly type anyway.
Alternatively temperature may well play a role , as is the case with cichlids, but I haven't seen any numbers

HI

Dad's bristles are about 1" long and thick all over his face, looks as though he has a tree on his head. He's about 4" long.
