View Full Version : Do all wrasses hide in the sand?

I got a solar wrasse yesterday and I already have a green wrasse that has been in the tank from the beginning...survived the plague of the move. It's been over 4 months since we lost almost all of our fish, so I'm starting to restock again.
Anyways...the green wrasse has been chasing the solar wrasse a lot and the solar just hides up in the corner of the tank or against a rock.
My question is, how come it doesn't bury itself into the sand like other wrasses as a defense mechanism? Wouldn't that make it feel safer than hiding in an open corner and constantly being scared?
I turned out the lights, so the green wrasse "goes to bed" and it did. I am hoping that while the green one is "asleep", the solar one can maybe establish itself a little.
Thoughts?
Short answer, no, not all wrasses hide in the sand. The burrowing wrasses include the Anampses, Coris, Halichoeres, and Macropharyngodon genera.

solar's are a bit skiddish to begin with and mine took several weeks to swim out in the open and not hide all the time. Odd that a green wrasse would be exhibiting such dominant behavior...but then again it is a wrasse and the last one in is bound to get picked on.

I remember back when I got the green wrasse, I had one of those diadem dotty back guys...yellow and purple. Anyways, the green wrasse was scared of him when I added him to the tank because the little guy would chase him. They then started a rivalry and were not afraid of each other, yet respected one another's space. When the dotty back died, the green chromis I guess had the notion that he "won" and became a "tough guy" ever since. It died down when I had a fully stocked tank, but after the plague hit after the move he was one of 3 survivors left and once again became the dominant one of the tank. If he goes to chase after the solar wrasse and say, the solar is not facing him, he gives up and swims away. But if the solar shows submission, he won't stop chasing. He just seems to enjoy bullying and eating everyone's food out of their mouth. I'm hoping that once I start stocking again, things will balance out. But I hope my solar doesn't die in the meantime from anxiety. It sure eats a lot though when I feed, so that's a good sign. It also has occupied a cave for its safe zone, which is good as well.
Thanks for the replies...any suggestions or advice is welcomed still.

Do bears **** in the woods? Just kidding. Not all do. Even specimens of the same species some may others won't.
