so i really liked my first two designs of the filter, but now i thought i would again tinker with it!:naughty:
here's the current filter:

it a beauty and is awesome. :joe:
but i wanted something with more media.
so, i brainstormed the idea of having a filter that uses a simple plastic jug with a strainer at the bottom and a pipe out the top lid that runs to an in-line water pump which circulates the wate rback to the tank!!!
first, i needed a container! :22_yikes::22_yikes:
anyway, i went to wegmans and looked around.
i ended up buying an 40 oz jar of "wegmans non-dairy" creamer.
it was 3 dollars roughly. i ripped off the label and emtied the contents into another container- my dad will be set for weeks with his coffee!!!

next, i went to the local pet store and was puttering around. they were selling parts for an old fluval 303 or 403. so i took what they were selling for 5 bucks flat!!
turns out i got the following (all 1/2" connections for tubing!):
connection valve with 1/2" connections
an elbow joint
another sort of union/connection valve of soem sort
an intake pipe
a spraybar
a pic:

anyway, its a start! i'll be building it and posting pics as i do!
ummm, i wouldbe making this an external filter ( i got HUGE utz snack jar barrel i bought at sam's club for 5 bucks), but since i'm a college guy renting and living with my folks, i figure it ain't a good idea id this were to suddenly leak...might be a slight problem there!!!:hitting:
its a start!
what im looking into now is pumps and the debate is on in my brain:argue:
the quiet one looks good but 26 watts!
lol, id be spending 3 bucks a month for the thing!
i like the new marineland utility pumps. but why do they use 5/8" fittings?! i mean, lol, 5/8" is kind a an odd number. is there any way to adapt 5/8" to 1/2" tubing, besides just ramming it onto the pump and hoping it'll stay?!!!:help2:
the eheim 1048 uses 10 watts but is 57 bucks! isn't cheap and im on a budget, so i might bite the bullet on the quiet one...[sighs]:flamed:
