Anyone want to take a guess as to what type of algae this is and what will eat it? It came on a rock with a coral a few months back and seemed to stay in check until just recently, now it is starting to spread to other rocks. I think turbo snails will eat it but it is hard to find good turbos right now. I checked around today and the few I saw looked dead or near dead at the couple LFS that even had them.

Some reason the pic wont load for me...http://www.chucksaddiction.com/
There is a section on the left info links..to hitchhikers ..and algae..

There are pics and descriptions of algae..should help you ID..wish I could see the pic to help..

Don't see anything on that link that is of help. I think I know what it is though, just want to see if others can ID it. It looks similar to Rhodophyta in coloring but I think it is something a little different.

I knew you would get it right Reefscape. I think it is actinotrichia fragilis as well. I read that Tangs love to eat that stuff, but a tang is not an option in my tank, but then others said Turbo snails will also eat it.. any thoughts on that?

It does look cool to me as well, that is why I let it be when I got it on the rock with the coral.. and for many months it seemed to stay on the rock and not grow too much (mainly because my lawnmower blenny loves to mow it down, just not all the way), but recently, last week, I have started to notice a little bit sprouting on other rocks and I don't want it to get out of control. Astrea snails and hermit crabs don't seem to touch it.. and I am not a fan of turbo snails because of their bulldozer effect on corals, but I will get a couple to solve this problem.

Please do let us know how it goes with the turbos Ace, be interesting...I think i have had at least 1 clump of this algae in each of my tanks over the years, never seemed to grow that quickly...

Eh.. turbos are not working on it at all. Put in 3 very large turbos.. and I really hate turbos because of their size.. put 2 right on the algae and one next to it and they all just walked across it and kept going. None of them seemed to even stop to take a bite. I was told today that it isn't very likely turbos will eat this stuff... it is Tangs that will eat it like crazy, but unfortunately a tang is not an option for me.
