Corydora question. Please help.

I went to petco today and bought a second corydora... and i was wondering if they needed to be the same color type or whatever to get along... Because the one i got today was a spotted cory.. and the one i already had is just a regular colored cory. Heres pics.

Are they going to be alright together? they seem like they're kinda nervous of eachother right now.. but... i think they're following eachother around more now and getting use to eachother. The non spotted one keeps like.. sucking on the spotted one. i dont think its sucking, but it looks like its trying to stay really close to the spotted one.

You should probably get a few more. I know that the bottom one is a peppered cory. They will get along fine. Corys are the sweetest fish ever. They love to school together and if none of their type are around they will hang together. I would suggest a few more in any case. You will love them!
 
I have a couple of different types together and they've been together for years - never a fight. I think your little ones will be happy to have each other.

I would get a few more, but alot of people are telling me my tank is overstocked. Its a 5 gallon and i have 1 glo fish, 3 neon tetras, and 2 corys. I think its fine but i guess its not what other people think xD.
 
It would be better if the Cories were all the same species and, given room, A lot of the same species is better.

The fish know the difference, even when the species look alike to us. Critters enjoy and would rather be with their own kind and Cories are usually found together in very large numbers.

By the way regardless of what you may have been told Cories are not garbage eaters. Yes they forage in the gravel or substrate but they are seeking live stuff if it is to be found. Cories need access to the surface to get a gulp of air so even though they may be typically seen scurrying about the bottom every once in a while they will dash to the surface and back down again. If you can get five or more (more is better) together the behavior changes a lot and becomes even more interesting.

This much abused type of critter has long been a mainstay in the Hobby due to it's appealing nature and the fact that it is usually tolerant and well behaved. People are quite often sold on them as cleaners even though that is not what they are but it is easy to grow fond of them.
 
Yeah i kinda thought about that as i was getting the spotted cory.
I had a feeling they would lash out at eachother, which they just bolted in different directions when they first come in contact with eachother.
but now the peppered cory tags along close to the spotted cory, and goes off and does its own thing every few minutes.

I'm working on getting a bigger tank, but i just need to keep my fish in this 5 gallon for now. Still getting use to this whole fish thing. I know my tank was WAY overstocked at first when i had 6 tetras, 4 glo fish, and the peppered cory... but most of the fish died from not knowing about cycling :(

Anyways... i hope these two corys do alright
 
Socially they will be great. I have never seen an aggressive cory. Have fun with them.
 
No guesses on either the julii type or the paleatus. Most fish at LFS are younger and smaller but not always. Most creatures grow to adult length very fast and then fill out over a little longer period. It is normal to not see actual species colors until a year later. Some fish, as with killies, grow up to adult size and color in weeks so there is no hard and fast rule.

If you continue to do water changes and allow enough room for larger number of species any critter should do well. For the moment, if it is possible, get rid of one and get another of the same species of Cory, even though the Cories should not bother one another.
 
I hope this isn't considered derail, I really think its relevant.....don't want to start a new thread that is so similar to this.


I want to get perhaps 20 cories for a 270g.If you were going to get this many would it then be okay to get different kinds?Maybe 5 each of 4 different kinds?

I was hoping it would be acceptable, and that my cories would be happy enough to want to hang out in Paris....lol
