I've had anacharis in my tank for about a month now and over the last few days it started sending out roots from near the tops of the plants. What should I do? Can I cut just below where the root is and plant the new part? I usually trim the new growth shoots and replant them with success but have never seen this...

I don't think they're those kind of roots. It isn't a plant that forms soil type roots. Those would be just water type roots.. more like absorbing feelers. Besides, you can plant it anyway without roots.

Take a common pothos for example. When you take cuttings and put them in water, they grow roots. But those are long, skinny, flexible, nearly white colored roots. If you then plant it, the "water" roots go away and the plant forms an entirely different root system that's thicker, more rigid, and darker in color... these are the soil type roots.

Getting back to aquatic floaters. Those soft anachris roots aren't going to anchor the plant, hold it upright, or draw anything from a soil substrate. If it starts looking stringy, you can even clip them off. It wouldn't matter.

They do that.
It's nothing to worry about.
They send out "roots" but they don't actually do too much. You can cut, and plant wherever.

Another random anacharis question:

Do the mother plants typically die or stop growing once they send off their shoots? I have a few mother plants with ~4" shoots that have appeared to stop growing while the shoots continue to grow.

Any answers to the above question?

Once a stalked is topped it will grow side shoots but the main stalk will stop growing.

So should I keep the mother stalk or no?

Not sure but the stalks that have been topped start to look shabby after a while.

Maybe someone else can chime in...

I started with two small anachris stems...now I have an uncontrollable forest of anachris.. I'm starting to hate this plant!!

I have about 60 13" high bunches of anachris now.. been throwing stems away everyday for a few weeks now... want to throw it all away but my molly's seem to like it.

all my "mother" stems seem to look shabby near the base but I think thats just cause fishes are eating them..I'm far from an expert though
