hey, i was checking out this site and saw the picture of your spiny eel. it seems i have an eel of the same species as yours (and just a little larger). what do you know about yours specifically? i've seen so many websites and books with conflicting scientific names for this particular eel and conflicting estimates of its ultimate size. what is its scientific name? i purchased it labeled as a "zigzag eel" about 1 1/2 years ago, and he's my favorite fish by far. my friends, well two of them, have started an "I HEART EELY" fanclub, even. i also have another eel, definitely a tiretrack eel based on books and websites that actually agree with each other, and he's inventively named "eely #2" and, fyi, he also has a fanclub.:D

Mine was just called a spiny eel. He's one of my favorite fish--recently moved into a 55, to get him away from the puffers. He's doing very well, and will eat just about anything he can. So far he hasn't gained much in length--maybe 2 inches in 9 months, but has gotten quite roly poly. I've never spent much time trying to track down a specific name for him. Of those listed on Fish Base, the 2 I favor are: http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Spe...e=Aethiomastacembelus&speciesname=vanderwaali or http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?genusname=Caecomastacembelus&speciesname=frenatus

One of the problems is that they both can have variable color patterns. With the relatively small length of mine, the first link seems more likely to me.
