As a cichlid gets older will it need a larger hole or cave to stay in. Will it even need one when its older. like when its the size of your hand, or a little smaller

Sorry missed this post :)

Well, sorta depends on the cichlid you know, but, as a general rule you want the decor to complement the fish. Whether it is rift lake or new world they should be able to move freely around the place, get in and out of caves etc.

So yep, I would make sure that the fish had access to some cover, whether rockwork caves/terracotta pot 'caves'/driftwood & plants (in case of e.g Angels and Discus) that was appropriate to its size.

What kind of cichlid are you keeping ?

Yep adjust as they grow all fish love cover they feel more secure..

There are just some things you cant take away from a fish insight and being eaten by another fish is tops in my book so yep adjust their furnishings as they mature..

They'll want lots of rockwork or equivalent type of decor, with lots of routes through it, caves etc. You want the rock piled up in a couple of piles almost up to the waterline, or even all along the tank, again piled up to the waterline - something like that.

They'll also want about four foot in length as regards tank size, in order to accomodate sufficient numbers to manage aggression - your stocking is a litle light for this - but you can't do that without a big enough tank.

i am thinking of a peacock and maybe another cichlid. i am using a filter for a 100 gallon tank, so i dont think filtration will be a problem

If your guys are stable at the moment, sit it out and wait for the 55 before adding more fish - a stable mix in an african tank you should be really slow to interfere with, even in a big set up. Anyway at least you know they're going to need the 55 - sooner rather than later, and then you can really increase your stock.

i wont get more until the 55 is ready, there will be a max of 10 inther, but way over filtered so i think i will be fine

they'll have a 75 gallon in about a year, if i have the money, but a 55 will do, im not like those other that stock 20 of them in a 20 gal tank

You can have a couple more in a 55 - over-filtration is absolutely the way to go.
