Hey, I was wondering does anyone use a power backup supply for their tank (for outages)? I thought about using a battery powered pump, but I just find them up to 80 gallons and have a 120 gallon tank. Also, it would be cool to have the power backup supply for the heater also. I know Wal Mart carries a Black and Decker power supply for like $80 or so, but just seasonal. Does anyone use anything like this and where did you find it? Thanks!

I keep several aerators from the sporting goods fishing dept (for minnows) handy. They use D cell batteries and are only $8-$10 a piece. That way I have some air for each of my tanks.

My tanks filters and heaters are on my computer's UPS while the lights are just surge protected. In the event of an outage(which has yet to happen) I would shut the comp down asap and hope the UPS holds out til the power comes back. Look wherever they sell computer products APC is a good brand.

Moko I saw your story about the ice storm and I felt soo bad for your loss I think thats why I made sure to put my tanks on the battery backup. I know you were running alot of tanks probably pushing alot of wattage in heaters and filters so a small unit wouldn't have helped but depending on how much you wanted to invest there are companies that could estimate how much wattage your essential systems draw per hour and how long they could provide that. After seeing the damage that a power outage can cause I think a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) will become a required piece of equipment on all my tanks.
Check this one out as an example of a higher power requirement backup. http://www.apcc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=321
Im not an APC employee or anything just had good luck with there products.

Thank you Aphex!
As soon as we can afford it, we will be looking into a generator too.
Besides the loss of my tanks, we **** near froze to death ourselves :(

I've got 1 tank on an APC battery backup. I haven't had any power failures yet though so I can only assume it's working well.

Thanks Matt and Kamikaze. I had bad luck with my APC backups, the computer goes out right away when the electricity is out, lol, it's like thought these things were supposed to keep the computer on for awhile??? My fault thought, bought the real cheap APCs, guess you gotta buy the nice ones.
