help or explanation of my observations would be appreciated.
Early last week I noticed a tiny bit of cyanobacteria at the end of one of my gordonian's branches. This has happened before, and my course of action is with a plastic medicine dropper, gently flush the area with a stream of tank water, to remove the cyanobacteria. Sometimes I use a gentle suction as well. I have done this before, with no ill effect; he temporarily closes his polyps, but reopens by the next day, if not later on the same evening.
This time however, he stayed closed for about 3 days. I noticed some strands of something, hanging from his branches. They were not the color of the cyanobacteria, they seemed to be something else. It didn't seem to be another kind of algae, but I was not sure. I considered the possiblity that he was sluffing something, and was on his way out.
I removed the stuff with the medicine dropper (by the way, it is dedicated to tank use, and was never used for anything else.) and then over the weekend did a scheduled water change and cleaned out the protein skimmer. After another day or so, polyps began to reemerge. Slowly there are more showing each nite, tho he is not back to his former glory. I am hopeful but would like feedback as to what might be going on, and any more appropriate steps to take to preserve his health. My water testing shows everything is in order, and my other corals look great.

I would try and get a little better flow going by it so the cyano won't take hold there. It was probably just irritated by the algea on it.

I thought of that; I shifted his position slightly, as well as the angle of an outflow tube so that he is more directly in a flow of current. He is continueing to improve. Any thoughts on what looked to me like sluffing?

Gorgonians will shed a waxy coating to keep algae at bay. That could be it. Have you looked at the section on gorgonians in Borneman's book?

no, I haven't - I haven't purchase that volume yet; went to a couple of bookstores this weekend, but they did not have that particular one.

Will probably need to purchase online. does it have a good section on gordonians? I am looking for a volume with some details. I have a few basic books, and am ready for something that goes beyond a very topical treatment of the invertebrates. I need some meaty detail!

I did have the impression that something was being shed from the gordonian himself. What was being sluffed was not the color of cyanobacteria, was clearish in fact.

We are at about 75% bloom; not like he used to be, a few bare spots, but polyps coming out all over the creature. No absolutely bare branches, which is a good thing. the cyanobacteria seemed to have gone into hiding the last few days, though I am at the ready with my siphon, ready to suck them into oblivion!! any additional info would be welcomed!

Do you do supplemental feedings for the gorgonian? We use DT's phytoplankton. Borneman suggests frequent feedings and strong currents. He also describes a clear mucus like sloughing.

I am feeding; I am using a product called Marine Snow, recommended by our LFS.

I am open to alternatives, if there is an opinion about what products are best.

Also, how often are you feeding?
