Hi all. I am about to set up a 20g that I have had lying around and I decided to make it a bit greener than the average freshie tank, if you catch my drift. I have done this one the past, so I am a little (take this with a grain of salt ;), since the salty side is my usual hideout) savvy. I am basically looking to get into using Nova Extreme SLR fixtures (2 24w) for efficiency and output reasons. In any event, I know that this is enough to keep lower light corals in SW, but how does it stack up for plants (I would imagine it'd do fairly well, considering PAR and the fact that i'll change lamps)? I would like to keep a wide variety of plants, ranging from Micranthemum, submersed Riccia, and more exotic Ludwigia species to Cryptocoryne and possibly an Anubias or two in the shaded portions (other stuff tempts me as well, so I would really like to be able to have a broad range of choices, if possible).

As far as equipment goes, I have lots left over, including a Rena canister (can't recall model at the moment, but I can reduce the flow easily), a few small powerheads, 10# CO2 cylinder w/ solenoid, needle valve, etc. and pH controller. Enough dry fertilizer (KNO3,KH2P04, and a broad element/iron fertilizer) to last a long time. I also will have Eco-Complete substrate, so all of that stuff is covered. Just wondering if the lighting is good enough to keep the wide range I'd be interested in.

Thanks,
Amp

IMO you should be looking at a much larger tank than a 20 gal given your ambitions.

Sorry, 20's the limit :). I don't mind frequent trimming. If it does become an issue for me and my schedule, what would be some suggestions for slower growing and/or dwarfed stuff?

Wow, I honestly thought that T5s would have gotten me a bit further than that. I am going to be using amongst the highest PAR bulbs on the market, like the GE6500K and the UVL Aquasun (maybe Giesemann's midday bulb?). Would that still be insufficient for the higher light stuff?

will you be going for a 20long or tall?
Either way thats 48w over a 20g, thats 2.4wpg. Yes t-5ho are great and even the SLR of the nova light helps deliver more light. You will still be limited on the types of medium light plants you will be able to grow. Even if some do grow, you will not be able to get them to their full potential. Colorful/compact.

I agree, the higher light plant species will have a hard time growing even in that light. There's still a lot of great plants that will work though...and if you do want slower growers you'd be looking at the lower light plants anyways.
