I have a crypt spiralis in my 75G that's been growing nice and tall and getting new leaves since I planted it about 8 weeks ago. The tips of the leaves seem to eventually get soft and mushy and fall apart, so I pinch that part off. Does anyone know why the plant ends are getting like this?

Sounds like a copper or Potassium deficiency. Probably the latter.

What can you tell me about a potassium deficiency? Should the lack of potassium also affect all the other crypts in the tank? Most of my other crypts are really beautiful, especially the crypt retrospiralis I have in there. The really short crypts are lacking green color though. I thought that might be from the tank getting too much light., Generally crypts don't like much light.

Only once a week flourish.

Thanks for the guide to nutrient deficiencies Slappy.

When I got mine some leaves got soft tips after a while instead of a full leaf crypt melt though I lost a few at first. Slappy's probably right, I'm an inconsistant feeder but it happened again when I moved some to another tank.

OK, thanks fishorama. I'll let it settle in for a while longer and see what happens. Most of the crypts I have are other varieties and even when I move them there's no melt, so I haven't seen much of it. It just seemed strange that my retrospiralis is absolutely gorgeous with no soft tips and the spiralis has soft tips, i didn't understand that.
