Sorry this is another long post. Once of these days I'll learn how to be brief.

Current setup: One 30g with turtle + 4 feeder guppies.

Goals:
plant 30g
breed Endlers, use culls as feeders

The nearest store with supplies of any kind is an Agway. After that, it's a Petco 40 minutes away. Selection is quite limited at both, so I'm stuck ordering online. That means I should go ahead and order everything I need at once, preferably from only one or two sources to save on shipping.

So: WHAT should I get and WHERE should I get it?

I have:
10g --- emptied, cleaned, dried
Whisper 40 In-Tank filter
5g Eclipse Hex w/built-in (fairly lousy) filter --- emptied, cleaned, dried
API Tap Water Conditioner
API Stress-Zyme
API ammonia test (liquid)
API pH test (liquid)

I need:
nitrite & nitrate tests (liquid)
ammonia (for fishless cycling---can get locally)
java moss (or other moss?)
java fern
anacharis
other plants?

Plants must be hardy, low-light, and floating. I have no substrate and I like it that way. Fry cover and nitrate absorbtion are the primary goals, though I don't want to completely out-compete the algae because it will feed the feeders. I've tried my turtle on one java fern and she isn't eating it but she is "exploring" it, so fragile/shedding plants are not a good option.

"Driftwood" I can pick up outside and boil the heck out of to disinfect and waterlog. I've tried this once and it worked great. I live in NH---plenty of tree branches here.

I also need a tank "first aid kit." Please advise! What should I have on hand? Remember that I can't count on getting ANYTHING locally, but I intend to keep hardy fish and my resources are limited, so it has to be within reason.

I plan to get the Endlers off Aquabid once everything is set up and cycled.

Advice much appreciated. Thank you!

I'd probably add Anubias to the list of plants, as they are hardy and not likely to be ripped to shreds. Other floaters could be duckweed, hornwort, and guppygrass.

The turtle might eat the duckweed, which is good for him anyway.

If you're looking for Endlers, I think some of the members here have excellent stock. Post a WTB thread in the classifieds and wait. Plants are also readily available also, depending on the type you want, and when some of the sellers prune their plants.

Keeping the cash flow within the forum helps everyone in the hobby.

I have been studying "The Ecology of the Planted Aquarium". One of the very interesting and important concepts is to have some rooted plants that breach the surface of the water. This brings carbon into the system without having to add CO2. I have a dwarf lilly on order but there are other low light options. For no substrate you would leave the plant in it's own pot.

shawnhu - Are anubias floaters? Somehow I thought they required substrate. Every day I learn just how little I know... I'd love to buy from the forum, I was just thinking that shipping would really add up if I was buying from lots of different sources. I suppose there are probably people here who sell a lot of what I need, so maybe I could still keep the number of sources down.

colinsk - That's fascinating. Does it have to be rooted in substrate or would a floater like frogbit do the job?

Anyone have suggestions for a "first aid kit"? I can't count on getting anything locally when trouble arises, so what should I have on hand?

I am curious about this too. I was wondering what a "first aid kit" would look like. Salt? Meds? Special food? I will be definitely be following this thread!

I was told to get Kosher salt and Ich medicine. I have not used it yet. Knock on an oak tree.

Where is a good place to buy a battery powered air pump? Do they make battery powered heaters as well?
