I finally finished the ten gallon for the six Assassin snails that are currently in a six gallon. I'm hoping that they will lay eggs. Right now I only have pond snails and ramshorn snails in the tank along with vals, hornwort, and anubias. All of the plants in this tank are young plants taken from "mother plants" in other tanks. Rather than two foam filters I went for one large one. The substrate is small pond stones. I want to build up the pond snail colony before adding the Assassins. IMG_0997.JPG

You need to add larger rougher rocks and stiffer plants. Assassins really like those surfaces to lay their eggs on. I use Swords and Bog plants because they are stiff as a place for them to lay. I would also add MTS to the tanks and go with sand. Baby assissins like to burrow and in that large gravel you may not even know you have baby assassins until 2 moths after they hatch because they will live below the large rock substrate until they are bigger.

I have not had much luck with them laying the eggs on the bog wood and with the larger substrate rocks they will lay them on the substrate instead of the plants. Also you will not be able to siphon that tank once they start laying or you are likely to suck up eggs or fry.

Once you see the first egg it will be a 3 to 4 week wait for babes.

How big are your Assassins... I have found they do not start to lay until at least 3/4 of an inch and you want to make sure you have at least 5 in the tank since they do not pair up but one male will be with several females.
 
What about the Anubias? Would they not like to use those? I have basic lighting on that tank so I have to plant accordingly. And what do you mean by rough rocks? Any advice is appreciated. My Assassin babies did hide in the pond stones in the 6 gallon, but I never vacuumed the gravel in that tank.
 
I also have some golf ball sized pond stones if those would help.

They are 1/2" in length (the largest snail). I have 6 total.

Lava rock works great for your rougher surface, try to find one with lits of holes and crevices.....

I find the taller the plants the better. The best plant I found was a bog plant I got at Petsmart in one of those tubes, they love that plant to lay eggs on. You can put the pond stones in too or add some plastic plants for the to lay on..

.5" you still have some time before they are full grown.... So play around until you find a look you like.
