Could anyone please tell me how I should go about fixing my floors to hold the weight of a 55 gallon tank (I am in an apartment). Do I need to get a contractor or are there methods besides construction...thanks

A 55 isn't that heavy (700 lbs filled). Apartments are able to handle that weight without a problem. Just put it near a load bearing wall (try the outer edge of your house) and it will be fine. It really depends on the type of apartment you live in. If you live in a 3 level house where the floors creek, there could be a problem. But if you live in an apartment like me where the floors are concrete with steel girders, then youre fine.
