if you had the money to buy one canister filter right now what one would it be? make a pitch for others as to why they should buy it. also the twist..... say something good about the previous filter mentioned.

XP3 or 4. Big square media baskets, and no crazy interface... Just prime and plug in. Also, their big soft siliconey tubes are cool.

the FX3 and 4's are great for smaller tanks with there ease of use and reliablility, but for me the fx5 is the way to go because of it's huge media capacity and massive water movement.

I like my FX5...

Want to pick up a mag 350 for water polishing though.

I'm running 6 different size Fluvals with no complaint. From the 204 to the FX5.

I'm running a Fluval 305, a Cascade 1000 and a Magnum350. I like the Fluval best because it's quiet, well constructed and powerful.
Now for the twist...
The Mag350 was cheap and is a good filter for the money.

My favorite of those that I own is the Eheim Pro II, its a great filter and easy to deal with...but it was free. I don't know that I'd ever pay full price for a new one when I've had other brands that are significantly cheaper and seem to work just as well. As far as bang-for-the-buck, the Renas have my vote. Decent prices (well they used to be...haven't looked at them in a while), quick-disconnects, and lots of space for media.

For fluvals, I have a few running that are 10+ years old and starting to show some wear. They seem to be built very well, but they can be a serious pain to get primed, and I always get water everywhere when I open them. I'm guessing these issues have been mostly resolved with the newer models.

Eheim Classics....

Cant beat their efficiency and dependability.

Eheim 2262 would be my next filter to buy if I need one. It's a beefy filter, well made, lots of media space & customizable. The Q.D.'s are great & the filter is super quiet. Only downsides are it weighs a ton when full of water & the initial cost.

The twist - Eheim Classics are awesome filters. I can't say enough good things about them.:) Well, we were supposed to say something nice about the previous posters' choice of filter.

RENA XP3+. I've found them them to be reliable.

why?

Beast filtration: double outlet force is perfect for creating/directing a current in the aquarium (which is desirable for my SE Asian setup). The 3 media trays hold a good amount of media. Self-priming function is brilliant and robust (as long as at least 2 gallons of water are in the filter). The unit also performs an auto-air ejection once every 24 hrs. Only downside is the large footprint and heft. It has a drainage port at the bottom, but I never use it and just consider it part of my weightlifting regimen.

Filstar XP4

The XP3 was/is my first/only canister. It saved me from a lengthly, nightmarish bout with H.O.B.s.....having said that, in all fairness, I have no frame of reference for comparison to any other brand of canister, so I figure the XP4 can only be an improvement on an already great situation.

I don't know much of anything about any other brand of canister, so I can't really say something nice about the previously mentioned, but I would eventually like to have one of each.....

I don't know if they qualify but I like my H.O.T. Magnum. It is small and unobtrusive, gives decent circulation on a 48" tank. They also seem to do a better job than some HOB's do at particulate removal.

A Marineland C-360 for my 55 gallon tank. I've heard only great things about these types of filters, and they already come with filter media ready to use.

I love my rena's, I'm running 4 xp 3's and an xp4...plenty of media baskets for a variety different filtration options. If there is one I would like to try it would be the fx5 just for the sheer power

I personally love my AquaEl Unimax 150 w/UV and it is such an understated canister filter, they don't advertise as heavily as rena or marineland so they don't get the recognition. It has been a better canister than any that I have used, quiet, reliable, any media you want plus the added benefit of the UV. They are great!

Eheim.
I just bought my first one and the build quality is excellent.
I dont see me buying any other brand for now on.
Of course, mine is the 2262 for my 300g.

I have a mag 350 and a c-360 and I love them both. The mag 350 is the most reliable thing I've ever experienced in life....It just goes and goes, despite the fact that priming can be a pain (I'm not so sure I understand what a previous post meant by just tipping it, that has never worked for me)....The c-360 has now been amazing since I got the new motor and seal. Massive water flow and neate, easy baskets. It's very new and I haven't cleaned it yet, but I imagine it's very easy.

^ a good value in every way

My fav: Eheim Classic series - They got it totally right >30 years ago, why go w/ anything else? They provide good flow for ever, have good media volume and are pretty easy to clean.

I've got two magnum 350's and they are great for flow and easy to use.

I just picked up a C-360 (e-bay, slightly used, $31). I was surprised at how massive the thing is. It must hold 4-5 gallons of water inside of it. I've got to make a trip to get some new hoses and some filter floss. I'm kind of excited to get it hooked up and going. I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Right now I just finished soaking the thing in bleach and am letting it air out.

Eheim classics are really nice looking but my little wallet can't handle the price.

^uhhh...which one should i talk good about? Magnum 350...never tried one but I've read about about them being really good water polishers. Marineland C-360...also never tried one. I was interested in buying one because I liked the design and engineering going into it (basket gaskets and the attempt to eliminate bypass, as well as including bioballs).

Eheim...Here's one I actually have. I have a 2215. When I started moving stuff over from my old tank to the new one, I setup the 2215 to start building up bacteria and cleaning up the water from the used substrate. I started out with really cloudy water the night before and woke up to clear water. I was amazed by the filtration. I am also impressed at how much flow it has, even when dirty.

Fluval 205: Not a bad filter, but not perfect either. Wished they used standard hoses instead of the ribbed one but I see their intentions. I like the aquastop valve, except when it weeps a little water when I adjust the flowrate. It's my first canister so I'm a fan of it. I just like my Eheim more now.

Out of all the ones I've tried, my xP3 has to be my favorite. It's design is easy to work with and efficient. The Eheims and Fluvals I've had have worked well, but not as well.

The 2215 is similar to the ones I've had and they always perform well.
