Thanks. Aren't they readily available at your local pet store (typically the large, aggressive but beautiful Scolopendra subspinipes)?

I couldn't tell you, I haven't ever looked. My local fish store is www.thatfishplace.com (http://www.thatfishplace.com). I will have to check next time. They seem really fascinating.

I mean local pet store lol. I figured they were pretty common in the USA, from what I've read on Arachnoboards.

That thing is scary looking. Very nice shots. Will the fangs grow back when it molts?

Yep, the fangs are essentially modified legs, so they will be regenerated when the centipede moults. Thanks!

I've never seen any insects at any pet store I've been to.

Then you may have seen centipedes, since they aren't insects. :D

www.thatpetplace.com (http://www.thatpetplace.com) is a store, lol. It also has a huge online operation. I go there in person to do my shopping. They have a different huge section of the store for each type of animal they carry from furries, to fish, to reptiles/amphibians/arachnids etc.

Oh, lol. At first you said "www.thatfishplace.com (http://www.thatfishplace.com)" so I thought it was a fish store and not a pet store. What land inverts do you keep?

EDIT: Upon clicking the link I realised the two site names are one and the same, lol. My bad.

Nice leggy friend you have there :) Always fascinated by these creatures. Couldn't ever keep one as a pet though.

Why not? They have a bad reputation, but a lot of it is not true.

You know, I think you've only posted maybe two threads that didn't creep me out. I don't know why I keep clicking on them when I know it's going to be icky. lol

Awesome photography though.

are they poisonous?
Venomous, actually. Poisonous animals, by definition, secrete the toxic substance. On the other hand, venomous animals inject it, by means of a bodily appendage, in this case, maxillipeds, or modified legs.

My fiance is absolutely petrified of them. Even if I show her a picture of one on the computer, she runs out of the room screaming and crying.

I'm from Australia and grew up with all sorts of dangerous creatures in my backyard so I'm cool with a centipede.

Great pictures!
I wish I could keep one, but - My parents would be creeped out, and I could never find one locally. Plus I'd be a little creeped out, if it got out at night and got into bed with me *shudder* Well, it would'nt be that bad.

All I've ever seen in pet stores were spiders, snakes, and geckos, and some emperor scorpions. Never any exotic pets like that.

How do you de-"fang" them - is it painful?

Thanks! I've no idea how they do it - it's done by unscrupulous centipede "farmers" who sell these animals to local fish shops to sell as food for Arowanas (Scleropages formosus).

That's a shame that they do that to them. I hope it recovers them ok with it's next molt. I've never kept centipedes myself, but have had more than my share of tarantulas. Counting a Chillean Rose hatchout, I think I had like 247 tarantulas at one time, with about 35 species in the entire collection. Moved in with an arachophobe and traded my collection to the store I used to work in for credit and don't keep any nowadays. Still miss some of them.

That's a massive collection. What made you give them up?

Thanks! I don't feed my pedes goldfish with any regularity, but this guy was very skinny so I decided to give him a big meal.

I had to get rid of them in order to move in to the new place. My room mate to be was an arachnophobe. I got $400 store credit for the tarantulas and kept the enclosures. Would have gotten a lot more selling direct and splitting up the collection, but didn't have time to mess with it. Thought about getting back in to it, but no pet stores in the town I now live in to get crickets regularly from, and don't want to mess with another roach colony for feeding just a couple Ts.
