Sponge, ceramic lumps of various shapes, bioballs, or even pot scrubbers all serve the same purpose. All provide surface area for the bacteria needed for biological filtration to grow on. Sponges will trap more particles than ceramic, and take a few minutes longer to rinse out when cleaning the filter. Otherwise, what you use is pretty much a matter of personal preference. One type of media may have more or less surface area than another, but the bacteria population is relative to the bioload. It's difficult to imagine a filter (approriate for the tank size) that wouldn't have enough surface area regardless of the choice of media.

If you ever check out Whisper filters you will see a black porous sponge that they refer to as the bio-foam.
