Hi guys. This past Sunday I changed to substrate in my tank from white gravel to play sand. That was quite the chore, but my 2 sterba corys absolutely LOVED it! I went to my favorite LFS (Country Critters in Patchogue, NY if anyone is local to me) and picked up another sterba and one albino cory (didn't say what type, just said albino... dunno if it matters). I was a little concerned the lone albino wouldn't be accepted as part of the group, but they all get along awesome. The 4 of them stay together much more than just 2 ever did.
One question some cory guru's might be able to answer for me. Why are Sterba's so expensive compared to other corys? The albino cost me $3.99 and they had panda's for 3.99 as well. Sterba's were 10.99 each! Are they harder to find? Country Critters always seems to have plenty of them! I had actually went there to pick up a pair of Otto's and they only had 1 left so I decided to get the Cory's instead and get Otto's sometimes in the next couple weeks.

I just got the only one left at my LFS. I had two gold fish that I had to rehome so they traded the two GFs for the Sterbai.

ok its a quote from someone and i might get a couple of the words wrong but the gen idea should work....
this guy i know goes to south america collecting. he was at a wholesaler down there that had a pound with maybe 10,000 of the one cory. he asked if they were rare since they were asking a lot more for them. he said no but people are willing to pay it since it looks nice.
its a common thing attractive fish go for more since people are willing to pay for them. the store pays 2-3x more for them any many of the others so they charge more. its one of the reasons why so many people ask me for them since when i have them i only charge. $4.50 even with shipping they save a lot.

I think because of their coloring and the fact that they arent as available in most places, makes their price tag a bit higher..they are my faves of the cories ...I have 2 of them buggers

Yeah they are definetely my favorite of the cories too. Thats why I didn't mind paying a little extra. I would have gotten 4 of them instead of 3 and the 1 albino, but my sister begged me to let her pick out a fish for the tank and that was what she wanted.

i have seen many different corys in the lfs's that i use but never that one, perhaps its harder to get hold of, the more common something is the cheaper it gets. I did see some stunning pure white albino corys that i was so tempted to get tho. All the other albinos i have seen were more off white

I have to comment on the sand. I think it is BY FAR the best substrate for corys. This past September I changed all my tanks over to sand and the difference in their barbells is amazing! I've never seen barbells like these on corys who have a gravel substrate. And they do love it.

cories are awesome towards other cories. doesnt seem to matter what species they are. i have a mish mash (i kinda wish now i had a large group of one species but ah well) and they tend to stay together
