Picked this up today during lunch. 125g (60x18x22) acrylic tank with one corner overflow and black acrylic background. The tank is old (10 years) but the person who gave it to me owned a LFS and really knew how to take care of it. I'm going to clean it up and look into a kit to buff the scratches out. It was the tank only so I need to build a stand and sump.. but hey.. free is free :)

Yep, my 120g had a lot more Coraline algae but it was a glass tank. I'm nervous about scraping on an acrylic

I'll more then likely move my oddballs into it, they are in a 50g breeder atm and I'm sure they'd like the extra space. Plus it allows room for more ;)

The quest has begun.. it's looking a little better but still have a ways to go. I'm definitely going to have to buff out all the scratches.. there are a lot.

What was he doing with it? Was it in storage on the sea floor by any chance?

I have no idea.. he said something about a "low tide" setup. Didn't know people setup different tanks for different tides ??

I'm inclined to agree with Fishy_Fun...I think it'll be amazing looking when you're finished with it. A labour of love and FREE to boot! :)

Ok, Night #2 work is done.. It's getting there. I still have a couple "problem" areas I couldn't get clean but I'm getting close. With the black background you can really see the scratches on the front. I imagine thats going to take a LONG time to buff out :(

well when i first started reading this post i said hey i wonder if hydrocloric acid/ muratic acid would clean that tank up and fast and easy after all coraline algea is basicly lime based. and it's kept in plastic bottles and shouldn't effect the acrylic but i guess it's too late. Being a General contractor and very handy, i would recomend that you not even try to buff out the front glass, if what we see in the pics are scratches and not scuffs it's not worth it, evn if you get rid of the scratches for the most part the amount of buffing needed in one spot over another wil creat what i'll call bottle glasses efffect your view will be distorted in one spot / magnified or blurry. my sugestion to you would be to by a new piece of plexi glass and Cut off the front piece. It's not that hard to work with plexi glass but there are tricks to it. The internet is a great place google cutting and soddering plexi glass/ acrylic.
good luck
