I was wondering which Eheim a 2213 or a 2215 would be the best filter for a 40 gallon breeder tank? I want really good filtration but not overkill.

I plan on low light to med light plants with sand for substrate and for fish... a gourami, rasboras, loaches and corycats.

Thanks,
Sher

would go for 2215 since in a planted tank you dont want any dead spots.

Thanks for the advice. It has been a really long time since I have had a tank and I just want to make sure I start off the right way this time! :)

Agreed, 2215, 2213 would not be enough flow I'm afraid. Might also want to pick up a powerhead or two.

Cory Keeper,

I don't want to sound dumb but.....
How would I hook up a powerhead? I have only run powerheads with a UGF and that was like 20 years ago. My last tank (about 10 years ago) had an Emperor 400 for a filter and that was it.

nothing to hook up, they have suction cups to attach to the glass. Just plug it in and its on.

Yeah I feel a little foolish. I just "Googled" powerheads and dead spots and then looked at the images. Ok, now I know what you mean. Thanks for your patience.

What do you think about the AquaBall Powerhead 1212 by Eheim it pumps up to 172 GPH. Would one of these be enough for water circulaton?

yeah, it would be good, But I've heard great things from the Koralia Nanos. a nano has a gentle flow yet still pushes 240 GPH.

Just curious here, but why would you not want any dead spots on a planted tank?

Wow. I really like the way those look! Nice and small and a higher flow rate too. My husband is gonna pitch a fit when he sees my shopping list for this tank! :evil_lol: Thanks so much for all your help!

the money difference is negligble for the performance you get from the 2215 over the 2213, you are already spending over 100 is my guess

Agreed...while you might only need a 2213, the extra flow from the 2215 is more than worth the additional price.

dead spots = poop/algae collection

Thanks, I don't have a power head in my planted tank so was just curious. Luckily I don't think I have any dead spots, I have not noticed any areas where crap accumulates.
